Untangling Media’s Mangled Messages
Samantha Nay

Tuesday night, Dawson’s Creek. Wednesday night, Two Guys, A Girl and A Pizza Place. Thursday night, Friends. What are you getting from it? Dawson’s Creekis a hip new show that every teenager secretly (or not so secretly) watches. It focuses on the life and times of the title character, Dawson, and his friends, who are high school sophomores in their tiny town in the middle of nowhere.

Every Tuesday, the gang gets together and finds a new adventure that leads to a new crisis that finds its way to a happy ending.

But stop and think about the messages. When Pacey has a love affair with his English teacher, Tamara, what does that say about our society? Is it OK for an adult to have sex with a teenager? (Reality check: it’s usually illegal).

And then there’s Jen’s secret past. She’s been sexually active since the age of 12. Hello? Does that say, hey, "Jen did it, so it’s OK for me?" I don’t know anyone who’s ready for sex at age 12, do you?

Dawson’s raging hormones, meanwhile, make him go for Jen, adding fuel to the misconception that all guys are pigs.

Two Guys, A Girl, and A Pizza Place. Berg and Pete live downstairs and are both college students who work at the pizza place downtown. Sharon is the single girl who lives upstairs and works for a chemical company that pollutes.

I tune in every week because I think Berg is the most hilarious character on TV. But the fact that Sharon prances around in too small dresses seems to say that girls should wear next to nothing to be attractive. And Pete going around telling anyone who will listen that his girlfriend is driving him crazy, makes me think it’s supposed to be funny for guys to dis their girlfriends. It also supports the stereotype that girlfriends are just a pain in the butt.

Friends. Well, everybody knows Friends. We all cried when Ross and Rachel broke up the first, second and third times.

But how about the fact that Rachel wouldn’t ask out one crush, Josh, so she changed like 12 million times into the skimpiest outfits (including her cheerleading uniform, which, "always worked in high school"). Why didn’t she try talking to him instead? Can girls only use their bodies to attract guys? I don’t think so.

And then there’s Ross, who dated a British woman for six weeks and proposed to her! What happened to taking your time and getting to know someone before you promise to love them forever?

I’m not saying that because we watch TV, we automatically believe the TV producers’ messages. But, with all the hours teens spend tied to the tube, you have to wonder whether some of them are sinking in. Let’s hope not. We have to be smarter than they are.
