Question of the Week

Are all condoms the same? Are the flavored condoms as safe as the other kinds?

All condoms are not the same. We recommend that people use condoms made out of latex or polyurethane. Latex condoms are the easiest to find and the most often used. Polyurethane condoms are harder to find. The most popular brand name of polyurethane condoms is Avanti.

Latex condoms are very durable and have been shown to reduce not only the risk of pregnancy, but of spreading sexually transmitted infections (STIs). When used with a water-based lubricant (with or without spermicide) they are not likely to break or tear.

Polyurethane condoms are also very durable, and some people find that these condoms are thinner and allow for greater sensation on the penis. Polyurethane condoms are a great alternative for people with latex allergies and can be used with any kind of lubricant.

Flavored condoms are marketed for use during oral sex. Since STIs can easily be transmitted if a person comes into contact with semen from an infected partner, using condoms reduces this risk. The flavored latex condoms taste much better than ordinary condoms.

Its important to know that some condom flavorings are made with sugar, to provide sweetness, and it is very unhealthy to place something sugary inside the vagina. Flavored condoms should not be used for anal or vaginal sex, because the flavoring agents can irritate the vagina and anus and cause yeast infections. Some condoms are not flavored with sugar, such as Kiss of Mint. These are safe to use for any kind of sexual activity.
