Roe v. Wade Turns 30

Wednesday, January 22, 2003, marks the 30th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court case that legalized abortion in the United States, giving women the right to control their reproductive health and obtain safe abortions. Prior to Roe v. Wade, many women resorted to terminating their pregnancies via unsafe methods in unsafe procedures—putting their lives at jeopardy.

But 30 years after this historic decision, women’s right to safe, legal abortion hangs in the balance, as President George W. Bush pushes an anti-choice agenda in an anti-choice House of Representatives and Senate. Thirty years from now, young women may not have a right to decide whether or not they wish to terminate a pregnancy. That is, unless young women and men who support women’s right to choose get active and work to ensure that Roe v. Wade is alive and well in their generation and future ones.
