Can you take an STI test at home, like a home pregnancy test?
There is a home test kit for HIV available at most drugstores. You have to prick your finger and send the blood sample to a lab to be tested. You call the lab a few days later for results. They also provide anonymous counseling over the phone. One current brand is Home Access and costs around $44.
But we really encourage you to visit your local health department or clinic for STI testing. Most offer free, confidential testing for HIV and other STIs. And they can treat you if your test comes back positive and help you reduce your risk for getting or spreading infections in the future.
