What is the NuvaRing and how effective is it?
The NuvaRing is a flexible rubber ring thats inserted into the vagina for three weeks each month to prevent pregnancy. Hormones, which are concentrated in the ring, are released into the bloodstream to prevent a female from releasing eggs, or ovulating.
This is another hormonal method, which basically changes the way a females body works to prevent pregnancy.
The ring is inserted into the vagina between the first and fifth day of the menstrual cycle. It stays in the vagina for exactly three weeks, when its removed. In two to three days, the girl will get her period. Exactly seven days from when she removes the ring, she inserts a new one. That gives ongoing protection against pregnancy.
The NuvaRing prevents pregnancy 98 percent of the time, when used correctly every single month. Its effective seven days after it is inserted into the vagina. The NuvaRing offers NO protection against sexually transmitted infections, (glossary link), so a condom must also be used during intercourse.
Some side effects include vaginal infections, irritation and discharge, headaches, weight gain and nausea.
You need a prescription for the ring, just like you do for other hormonal methods. The cost varies depending on where you go for a prescription. Usually, youll pay less if you go to a family planning clinic, like Planned Parenthood ($30-$35), versus a private doctors office. But, it really depends on whether you have health insurance you can use. When you call to make the appointment, ask. For more information, go to www.nuvaring.com.
