Lesson 5: Sex Education: Making Sure You Have the Information You Need to Make Good Decisions

By Ann Schurmann, M.P.H.

1. Have students read "Students Turn Lame Health Class into Solid Sex Ed" and "How to Fight for Better Sex Ed" of SEX, etc., then use the following questions to guide discussion:

  • To make responsible decisions about sex, people need to have good information to base their decisions on. What are ways teens can get reliable information about sex?
  • Do you think students should have some say about what they are taught about sex in school? Why or why not?
2. Have students design and conduct a survey among their classmates, friends and parents about what subjects should be taught in sex education classes and when they should be taught. When they have compiled and tabulated the results, hold a discussion about how parents' and students' opinions compare to each other and to what is actually taught in school. Help students decide whether they would like to take further action based on results of the survey.
